E-23 Option Card Communication Error  fault in Toshiba drive

E-23 Option Card Communication Error fault in Toshiba drive

Description This fault is specific to drives using advanced communication protocols via an add-on card (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, Profibus, DeviceNet). Unlike "Err" (which is usually serial/keypad), E-23 means the communication *module* is healthy, but the *network* connection is broken. The drive hasn't received a valid data packet from the PLC for a duration longer than the "Watchdog Timer." Causes
1. Network Switch Failure: The Ethernet switch connecting the drive to the network has lost power or frozen.
2. PLC Stop: The PLC processor was put into "Program Mode" or "Stop Mode," causing it to stop sending the heartbeat signal.
3. Loose Ethernet/Connector: The RJ45 or DB9 connector on the option card is loose or the tab is broken.
4. IP Conflict: Another device on the network was assigned the same IP address as the drive. Solution Check the LEDs on the communication option card. Usually, there is an "MS" (Module Status) and "NS" (Network Status) light.
- If NS is flashing red or off, the physical cable is unplugged or the switch is dead.
- If NS is solid green but the drive trips E-23, check the PLC logic. Is the PLC sending the control word?

Verify the "Communication Timeout" setting in the drive parameters. If the network is congested, increase the timeout (e.g., 100ms to 500ms). If you are commissioning and simply unplugged the ethernet cable to move it, the drive trips as a safety precaution. You can set the "Network Loss Action" parameter to "Alarm and Continue" if safety allows, preventing a hard trip during network blips.
