SV0606 Cooling Fan Failure (Beta/Spindle External) fault in Fanuc drive

SV0606 Cooling Fan Failure (Beta/Spindle External) fault in Fanuc drive

Description

SV0606 is the "External Fan" alarm specifically for Beta i-Series drives or certain Spindle amplifiers. It functions identically to SV0601 but is assigned a different code in the Beta series firmware. It indicates the heatsink cooling fan is stalled. The Beta series drives are compact and rely heavily on this fan; without it, the drive will overheat within minutes.

Cause

  • Physical Blockage: Chips or a stray cable tie are blocking the fan blades.
  • Dead Fan: The fan motor windings are open.
  • Control Board: Rarely, the circuit on the drive that measures the fan current/tachometer has failed.

Solution

  1. Visual Check: Look at the fan mounted on the radiator of the Beta drive. Is it spinning?
  2. Replacement: These fans are usually "Cartridge" style. Release the plastic clip and slide the fan out. Replace with the exact Fanuc part number, as generic fans often trigger false alarms due to different current draw profiles.
  3. Cleaning: Sometimes simply blowing out the dust restores the fan speed enough to clear the alarm.
