Troubleshooting ABB ACS560 Alarm AFF6: Identification Run

Understanding Alarm AFF6: Identification Run

On the ABB ACS560 general-purpose drive, seeing the code AFF6 on the display is not a sign of a hardware failure. Instead, it is a notification that the drive is prepared and waiting to perform a motor tuning procedure.

Troubleshooting ABB ACS560 Alarm AFF6: Identification Run

Alarm AFF6
Meaning: Identification Run (ID Run) is selected and the drive is waiting for a Start command, OR the ID Run is currently in progress.

Why is this Alarm appearing?

  • Initial Commissioning: You (or another technician) have selected an ID Run mode in Parameter 99.13.
  • Parameter Reset: Sometimes, after a factory reset or changing critical motor data in Group 99, the drive requests an ID Run to ensure motor control accuracy.
  • Wait State: The drive shows AFF6 to tell you: "I am ready to calibrate, please give me a Start signal."

How to Resolve AFF6

Option A: Perform the ID Run (Recommended)

For the best motor performance and energy efficiency, you should complete the ID Run:

  1. Ensure the motor is safe to rotate (if "Normal" ID run is selected) or that the brake is released.
  2. Press the Hand or Start button on the control panel.
  3. The drive will magnetize and rotate the motor. AFF6 will stay on the screen until the process is finished.
  4. Once finished, the alarm will disappear automatically.

Option B: Cancel the ID Run

If you do not want to perform the ID Run right now and want to return to normal operation:

  1. Go to Parameter 99.13 (ID run requested).
  2. Change the value to None.
  3. The AFF6 alarm will clear immediately.
⚠️ Safety Warning

During a Normal ID Run, the motor will rotate in the forward direction. Ensure the motor is decoupled from the load if the machinery cannot handle rotation during calibration. If you cannot decouple the load, use the Standstill ID Run option in parameter 99.13.

Important Parameters for ACS560

  • 99.13 ID run requested: Selects the type of ID run (None, Normal, Reduced, Standstill).
  • 05.01 On-time counter: Can be used to see how long the drive has been active.
  • 99.06 - 99.10: Ensure these Motor Nameplate parameters are correct before starting the ID Run.
